Winter pruning impacts for the 20-35% of the yearly labor demand that can be lowered by introducing mechanical operations when spur-pruning is adopted. Despite agricultural solutions have been developed in recent years, robotics in viticulture is still bursting, and only a few prototypes have been described for performing winter spur-pruning; at present engineering processes seem to be ongoing whilst interactions with grapevine physiology were never assessed. The first action will provide hierarchical guidelines for a translation of the human cognition process into algorithms for automated plant recognition, and robotized pruning. Multiple combinations of integrated general rules driving winter pruning process with specifically conceived case studies will compose a dedicated database for developing multi-modal sensing system for recognition of grapevine architecture and identification of target regions and cutting points. Moreover, the effect of robotized pruning on grapevine physiology will be evaluated by monitoring whole-canopy real-time gas-exchange on a seasonal base. Therefore, robot and plant performance will be characterized in several parcels varying in terms of soil conditions (bare soil vs grassed), slope (flat vs steep versant), plant growth (high vs low vigor), and cultural facilities (pre-pruning vs control vines). EJNita Milan, 2019 - 2021 If we bear in mind that the European Judicial Network (EJN) is a network of national contact points, clearly each national network is a “link in the chain” which helps to make the network effective. At present, the Italian national network does not yet have an autonomous tool designed to communicate with other networks and with national users. The general objective of the project is to create a new digital tool for the Italian network to enhance the ability of the Italian national contact points to effectively perform their tasks , vis-à-vis both Italian authorities and practitioners, and members of the Network in other Member States. Increased knowledge, along with the predisposition of specific tools (such as databases and e-books) will facilitate (and speed-up) the handling of cases. The project will also provide an answer to the need of making Italian practices more accessible (in terms of knowledge) and available to foreign practitioners, for example with regard to the Italian practices in the taking of evidence.
ricerca-copia-di-progetti-in-corso-mind-shaped-body
This new construct describes a cognitive schema that defines the future-oriented beliefs about the illness and the symptoms of someone with a chronic disease. These beliefs could be explicit (i.e., people are conscious of these thoughts – e.g., “My legs will never work again”, or “I will die soon because of this disease”), and implicit (i.e., unconscious beliefs - e.g., being afraid that the disease will get worst, but not being able to phrase it). The schemas can be characterized by different degrees of rigidity, and it is argued here that these expectations can ultimately lead to changes in the disease progression. The IE model suggests that the influence that mindsets could exert on the body proceed through both behavior modifications (e.g., adherence and compliance, lifestyle), or through a non-behavioral pathway, which is the same “direct” effect that characterizes the placebo effect. The overall aim of this project is to test the hypothesis that IEs have an unmediated effect on illness symptoms. This will be explored in the context of asthma, which is a debilitating respiratory disease, characterized by airway hyperresponsiveness, airflow obstruction, and chronic inflammation, with an increasing prevalence (more than 5%). ricerca-progetti-in-corso-fintech-11729
FinTech Milan, 2020 - 2023 The research focuses on FinTech that is the application of cutting-hedge digital technologies to improve financial activities . constantly addressed FinTech highlighting both its opportunities and threats for different interests, such as that of financial stability, consumer protection, financial innovation, etc. Both its newness and this lack of regulation encouraged centers of applied research, consultancy companies and the academia to contribute animatedly to the FinTech debate. For all these reasons, the research aims at studying FinTech, understanding the use of digital technologies in financial activities as well as its economic effects on all involved stakeholders and assessing which regulatory strategy best fits with it. Such "enabling technologies" are: digital platforms; big data; cloud computing; automating algorithms and distributed ledger technology (DLT). Distributed ledger technology (DLT) is a decentralized transaction and data management technology that leverages computer protocols to replicate the same ledger and update it without the need for a central responsible entity. Properly balancing different interests, such regulation can help the correct development of FinTech and turn out to be extremely effective for increasing the financial inclusion of the European Small Medium Enterprises (SMEs).
Home Projects University La tecnica tra enhancement e precarietà: apprendere dall'umano alla prova del suo limite. The enhancement is not able to "absorb" all the excess capacity that is produced in social life, in a twofold sense. The third question concerns the recognition of precariousness not as an evil to be eradicated but as a constitutive dimension of the human condition: a challenge that is faced by reopening to transcendence and rejecting the claims of reduction within the immanent framework. Only through a well understood conception of the limit of the human being it is possible to overcome the different forms of exclusive humanism characterizing both the posthuman and transhuman imaginaries and the processes of precariousness. Starting from experiences in which human limits are tested, it is possible to regain an integral look at humanism in the age of technology, to illuminate openings on that transcendence being denied and to discover instructive practices of social generativity.

Home Projects International funds The Internet of Toys. The Internet of Toys Milan, 2018 - 2021 This project will investigate the emerging communication world of the Internet of Toys where toys relate one-on-one to children and also connect to other toys, other children and/or database data. Engaging in future oriented research, this national and international research project will examine the emerging benefits and risks of these connected toys through engaging with families and industry, as well as with regulatory and policy developments. The research will inform and influence policy makers, toy designers and families of children too young to understand the implications of these toys in terms of data privacy and security. It will benefit decision-making regarding the design and regulatory environments in which these toys are made. CineAF Milan, 2020 - 2022 Despite rising institutional concern for the gender gap in the European job market in general (EU Gender Action Plan 2016-2020) and the film industry in particular, the Italian market share of films directed by women in the period 2006-2013 was 2.7%, while that by male directors was 97.3%. The Italian film industry is sealed shut even tighter for creators whose ide ntities intersect womanhood with a non-white or migrant background. This action redresses the persistence of this staggering imbalance by addressing the near-absenting of women’s and accented voices, both in the discourse around and practice of Italian filmmaking . Research by the European Women’s Audiovisual network has found access to funding to be the most problematic aspect hindering gender equality in the Italian cinema sector . The project will accomplish two objectives at once: the obviation of encrusted film historiography canons, and the creation of an alternative archive of cinematic creativity with the capacity to reinvent the category of Italian cinema. CineAF will showcase the persistence of women's creativity despite the deficits and biases of the industry, and therefore shift the onus onto industry actors to explain why they have left such a vast fount of material on the margins. Cultures of sovereignty, transformations of democracy and dynamics of power in the global age Milan, 2020 - 2023 During the last three decades in the human and social sciences, the processes identified as «globalization» has often been considered as the main cause of the crisis of the «sovereignty». Regardless of the results to which they came, many readings dedicated to the role of states, to their crisis or their survival, tend to proceed from a ‘monolithic’ view of «sovereignty», predominantly built on the model of the modern European state. In this sense, it would be essential to recognize different «cultures» of sovereignty, so like certain representations of reality, internalized (in different levels) by the actors, who establish criteria with which states interpret the international community and their own ‘material’ interests, and from which specific behaviors arise. The present research project intends to move within this image of sovereignty , with the aim of reconstructing the transformations in the cultures of sovereignty. Home Projects National funds Identification of molecular mechanisms of coronary instability in homogeneous subsets of patients with acute coronary syndromes for the implementation of precision medicine (PRECISION Study). In patients presenting plaque rupture and systemic evidence of inflammation, the high frequency of aggressive T-cells and the reduced number and function of regulatory T-cells suggest that coronary instability might be related to still unknown mechanisms involving adaptive immunity. In these patients, other mechanisms, including emotional and physical stress, probably play a pathogenic role, involving sympathetic nervous system activation and catecholamine release that, in turn, might lead to coronary vasoconstriction and favor vulnerable plaques fissure, platelet activation and hypercoagulability. The distinction of coronary artery thrombosis caused by plaque rupture into cases with or without signs of concomitant inflammation may have substantial therapeutic implications, as direct anti-inflammatory interventions for atherosclerosis emerge. An intense immunostaining pattern for hyaluronan and its receptor, CD44, has been reported along the plaque/thrombus interface in eroded plaque but not in fissured or stable plaque. Recent studies proposed a model of plaque erosion in which the endothelial shear stress and the consequent activation of Toll-Like Receptors (TLRs) might promote molecular pathways leading to plaque instability. SWIRL Milan, 2019 - 2021 The literature on industrial relations and the public debate mostly analyze the effects of technological innovations on the labour market with reference to its potential to disruption of a number of jobs and to modify the required competencies. In SWIRL project, the contingent work will include indicatively people who are paid according to the work done (both online and offline) and the services/performance he/she offers, not based on the time spent. The term slash work was coined to describe the 'slash' in the job title of someone who is an X/Y/Z - or journalist/web editor/PR, to give an example. In this scenario, industrial relations systems are called to respond to new challenges to ensure workers an adequate level of social protection , as set out in the "European Pillar of Social Rights". Home Projects International funds Cognitive Biases, Perceived Wealth and Macroeconomic Instability. Cognitive Biases, Perceived Wealth and Macroeconomic Instability Milan, 2017 - 2019 Recent findings in behavioral economics show that differences in perceptions can modify individual behavior in ways that have potentially relevant macroeconomic consequences. By means of laboratory experiments, the research intends to investigate whether perceived wealth leads individuals to make non-optimal consumption and borrowing decisions that result in large household debt accumulation . Such empirical experiments also allow to identify a set of policies aimed at offsetting the cognitive bias behind the formation of perceived wealth, so as to nudge individuals into consumption and borrowing decisions that are consistent with their own resources, thereby limiting the consumption/debt euphoria. Eventually, the researcher builds a full-scale stock-flow consistent macroeconomic agent based model in order to investigate how macroeconomic stability can be jeopardized when perceived wealth emerges for a large number of agents. Indeed, in this case, biased individual consumption and borrowing decisions become a potential source of instability for financial markets, since perceived wealth triggers a process of overconsumption and massive debt accumulation. Prejudicial bullying involving ethnic groups: Understanding mechanisms and translating knowledge into effective interventions Brescia, 2019 - 2023 Over the past decade, in European countries, as Italy, there has been an increase of immigration. One of the challenges in the interethnic peer relationships is represented by Prejudicial Ethnic Bullying (PEB), namely a form of discriminatory bias-based bullying, perpetrated towards individuals who belong to groups that differ for ethnicity, race, or religion (Russell et al., 2012). Recent studies indicate that PEB is present in Italy (Elam, 2013), and that, besides causal mechanisms already identified for general bullying, PEB is influenced by specific psychological and socialization processes that are connected to prejudice (Caravita et al. 2016). However, more studies are needed to develop clear theoretical models on the psychological mechanisms underlying PEB at different ages and to design interventions to tackle PEB effectively. We will explore the interplay and the relative weight in causing PEB of several processes that the literature on bullying and discrimination indicate as possible causal mechanisms of PEB and that lie at the individual and the proximal context levels. Pupils and teachers will respond to measures to assess PEB, generic bullying, peer group dynamics, psychological adjustment potentially associated with the involvement as bullies, victims or bystanders in PEB, twice: before (pre-test) and after (post-test) the implementation of the anti-bullying interventions. Home Projects International funds A Mindful Community for People with ALS and their Primary Caregivers. A Mindful Community for People with ALS and their Primary Caregivers Milan, 2020 - 2021 The primary aims of this project are two-fold: to develop a “mindful” online community of people with ALS and their caregivers, and to test its efficacy in the improvement of their quality of life. The study is built upon previous research by this study team testing an online mindfulness intervention for people with ALS and their caregivers, as well as research about the positive impact that mindfulness has on the ALS community. In this study, ALS patients and caregivers will first complete an online mindfulness training program. The social sharing platform will be characterized by prompts and suggestions to encourage the participants to apply and share “mindful knowledge” in the form of reflections, creative problem-solving, and positive engagement. The primary hypothesis for this study is that the active participation of a newly created “mindful community” will have a positive effect on the participants’ well-being in comparison to an active control group.
